Title: My free radial arm saw..
Post by: oldtools on March 31, 2014, 12:20:36 AM
Bulk pick-up time again, latest find;  free 8 1/4" radial arm saw..  Just cleaned it up, made a ply-board table, it works great.. Nice & small, 24" arm, 20" to 27" high & 22" table..
Guess some people don't value tools with missing parts, (Wooden Table)

Nice find, especially for free. I really don't get why radial arm saws aren't more popular for shop work.

I have a craftsman 10"radial arm saw, best 75 bucks I ever spent. The accessories it came with alone were worth that. Just like yours I had to put on a new table.

Agree, Radial arm saws are great!! 15"+ cross cut, any angle. Rip cuts, great with Dadoes blades to cut grooves for shelves..
like having Table saw & Compound miter Chop saw in one..

I always understood they were thought to be dangerous.  Especially at ripping they are supposed to kick back a lot.

Thats why I never used any, but I have no personal experience with em.

They can be dangerous, just like any other power saw.. you need to be carful with them,
Granted the saw rotates in the direction of the feed, so you need to pull slowly & control the handle so it doesn't bite too much & climb up the piece. But with a sharp blade that shouldn't be a problem as long as you control (HOLD) the piece & handle.

You also do not EVER want to hand hold the material with this kind of saw...
If it is too small, use a clamp!
