I found this piece very interesting, ive never saw one like it.

I am not affiliated and will not be buying it but just wanted to know if anyone had info on pieces like this

does it open enough to hold an automobile piston to install the rings ?

It's far more likely a lab clamp for holding glassware than a machine tool clamp.
The jaws don't look like more than 16 ga stamped sheetmetal.

Yeah, too light-duty for machinist work. But pretty neat just the same!
