A John Fray No. 70 Joint Brace, an Auburn No. 8 brace and a ratcheting brace (unidentified). I only wanted the Joist Brace, but the lot came with all three. With so many better options existing and in better shape, what does one do with a century old Auburn plane in so-so condition?

It's pretty, at least. My local Habitat store is thrilled to get that kind of tool, to sell to people who want them for their knick-knack shelves. While, on one level, this bothers me, because I think tools want to work, on another, I realize that the people who do that at least recognize the emotional power of the old tools. More attractive than ceramic piggies. And, who knows? Perhaps they'll spark an interest in using the tools in the minds of the young purchasers, or of the grandkids who visit (depending on the age of the purchaser).
