My first custom handled ratchet.
« on: April 19, 2012, 05:35:05 PM »
Since SK didn’t make the roto head in ½” drive I decided to make a custom ½” roto head.
I had started this project in December with a trip down to my best friends in warren. After spending way too much time screwing around on his lathe we managed to turn down the shank on the ratchet and turn the zebrawood blank into an oval. It sat like that till I finally unloaded my trailer and got the wife’s scroll saw out. After waiting on new blades I could get going.
I still need to do just a little more sanding but I could not wait to rub in some oil. I am really pleased with how the forming it to my hand came out.

That's cool.  Nice job and great looking wood.  I've thought about trying something similar on a couple of "no name" ratchets floating around the shop.  Now, all I need is a lathe----

I can't think of any zebras that wouldn't be proud of that! Nice work.

Hehe...that's the first step on the slippery slope ;P
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

I do not collect tools to sit unused for mere decoration, I may buy something only to use it once, I would say I have a redundant amount of spare ratchets, but I intend to use every one I have.
