« on: April 11, 2012, 02:44:33 PM »
Went to local rummage sale this A.M. and found these: left side saw set marked only patent;oew no name;Snap-on 91618;Thorsen 3016;Arcturus 41-W-1008-10. top is Acme pipe tongs pat Aug 6; 1872 32 in long. Center is thread die for Model T. hub. Right side Seng-Chicago latch usage unknown; Acme Handy Mitre Guage By Jos Miotk Mfg. Co. Pipe tong patent is 130278.
Seller said pipe tongs were said to be steam engine wrench when he got them. He also said thread die was for Model T hub. Havent checked thread beyond visual is right diameter compared to Ford hubcap and tpi looks right.

Datamp shows patent for these tongs as not known to have been produced, but this pair suggests otherwise.

Thing on right side is some kind of latch. It is cast iron and has(Seng-Chicago) cast into it. Usage unknown.
What gives me chills is those pipe tongs could have been used by someone who was in civil war. (1872) They haven't traveled far, patent holder was from Quincy,Il and thats only couple of hours from here.
Haven't checked out Mitre guage to see if it accurate or if it can be rezeroed; has spring loaded pin in cast recess for various angles.

Seng made furniture, and had patents for things like extension tables, davenports, adjustable chairs, so perhaps a furniture componant...

Jim, that Acme Pipe Tongs is a good find. I have a later version patented Nov. 9, 1880. I bought at the First Al Schulz Auction in 1994. It a No. 2 only 24" long. I don't think I've seen another since then.

If Seng made furniture, I'm bettin the latch is for under the top of a dining room table with leaves.
