Vulcan
« on: September 25, 2011, 09:58:02 PM »

Here's a neat tidbit from 1904.
Apparently the Commercial Club of Birmingham,Ala had this 88,480lb cast iron statue of Vulcan made for the St Louis Exposition where it stood at the entrance of the Mines and Metallurgy building. The statue was then donated to a Birmingham public park after the Exposition was over.

There is no indication that Williams actually had anything to do with the statue, but the craftily worded ad copy nicely dodges this and puts the picture over their Vulcan chain wrench....

There is perhaps a touch of irony, in that the statue is identified as being made of cast iron right over the moniker 'Drop forgings only'...
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

When our son Larry Bud was program director of an oldie station in Birmingham, he would program a Fourth of July music that was aired over their station timed with the fireworks in Vulcan Park. The Vulcan Park was closed in 1999 while the statue was repaired and rebuilt.  It was reopened in 2003.  By the way Vulcan won the Grand Prize as well as medals for sculptor and foundry at the St Louis Worlds Fair where it was first shown.

I have one Vulcan wrench. I've posted the picture before on another forum so some of you may have seen it already.

Good one!  Maybe I should accessorize my Vulcan hammer too.

These are the only Vulcan wrenches I have been able to find.  No pink ones found yet.

Excuse the question if it seems silly - Was Vulcan a registered marketing word used by Williams in reference to the steel they used, a particular time frame, or a particular model?  Until reading this post I thought it was in reference to only their chain wrenches.

>a particular model?

Trademark registration is not that specific, it would likely have been registered in the class 'hand tools', so even if they initially used it for only one thing, they could reasonably have then used it for any hand other tools.....

AA claims it was in fact registered, but not when, so I am not sure if it was (likely tho)
