Anyone recognize these things? They are about 20" tall x 20" wide.

Good grief! Where to begin?
1. Are the top rings on the top picture welded to the crossbar? I see that the links on the bottom picture are not.
2. What are the strange pins/knobs in the four wooden recesses? and are any of the suspended rings connected to them--or do the chains swing free?
3. Where did you find these contraptions? or were they made up to make us question our sanity?

Great photos, thanks for sharing. I have no idea what you have there, but I like it!!!!!!! Regards, Lou

Looks like someone's artwork.

Looks like something one would use to knock down the gate of the dwarf's castle. Heave ho men.

Oh! I've seen this exact set of pictures before. I believe the consensus was that this is a holder for a wine bottle- the neck goes in the rings and the bottom on the pegs. Not just for storage, but for a 45 degree angle that is important during some part of the process of making it.

Someone sent me the photos, so I don't have any answers to your questions, except for your very last one, to which I would answer "most likely."

I've heard this guess before but was never able to verify it.

The more I research these things the more I think this theory is correct. Someone probably made them as mystery items to bewilder anyone who saw them.

I also think it is a combination of art work, and wine bottle caddy, as Mac53 suggested. The 1/2 moon bottle sized cutout, with rounded dowel protrusion, to hold the 8 wine bottles base, and the ring for the neck. I did a bit of searching, and found nothing exact, but did desire a drink after looking at a few hundred designs. lol

It could very well be a "wine cradle". If you look at cradle images these two are quite plain and practical compared to the fanciful designs out there.

Yep' some artsy blacksmith's project... too much time on his hands

he created an item that gave our brains some exercise, to me, it looked interesting.
