More of a Who's-It than a What's-It...
« on: November 10, 2011, 10:53:15 AM »
A number of months ago I bought this very nice old 15m Wind-up Woven Linen Measuring Tapes in a Leather Case for $5 at a garage sale...

It is clearly well-made, but there is no manufacturer's name on the thing - just a crown logo. I have not been able to determine who the maker is.

Does anyone here - likely a European member - recognize this maker?

Good observations, Brian.

I figured it was likely not British given the metric scale, but who knows?!

I'd be delighted if it turned out to be Swedish, but "antikt måttband läder krona" turns up nothing on Swedish eBay nor Google. "Vintage leather tape measure" gives me 28 results on eBay Global, but none that match or feature a crown...

Might take a while for this, but it only requires the right person browse in here!

Did you pull the tape all the way out? Sometimes the name is on the tape at its longest extension.

Can you pull the crown off into a picture and search just the crown? I don't know if there is a search engine for picture match-just a thought

Yes, perhaps. Of course, the Swedes use the Crown as a symbol too...

A good idea, and Google actually does permit you to drag an image into its search engine. I just tried, but it didn't work and the results were not even close! I think a crown is so common a symbol that it is difficult to differentiate...

Stray thought...

The crown is fairly detailed, if we take it literally, it is an 8 pointed , perl tipped crown with 5 points visible, and a more-than-coronet height base, fairly specific to Germany...
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Is it indeed?

That's very interesting...

LB, The phrase you quoted "antikt måttband läder krona" comes up in Google Translate as Swedish and translates as "Antique tape leather crown".  Tried to find more by googling sweden, antique tool, etc, but no luck.

Thanks Al, but that swedish phrase isn't written on the tool anywhere; I meant it was the phrase I used to search Google Sweden as I had guessed the crown might have indicated Sweden as the COO...

very very early Lufkin tapes use that split hinge and ring design. They were available marked inches one side, meters/cm on the other side....(Alternate, feet/links for surveyors)

Is there a pin on the other side of the tape to pop out the lever?

Could be ass hide also...for some weird reason, it was popular for tapes..
