Title: Here's a funny little wrench
Post by: pritch on March 08, 2015, 09:52:38 PM
One of my kids brought this home from somewhere about 15 years ago and I just found it again when I was cleaning my shop. Chinese junk all the way and would probably break the first time any real force was used, but it's a hell of a conversation piece.

It goes from 7/16 to 3/4.

Had one years ago. It never worked well at all.

there was one on ebay not too long ago, but I do not think that they said where it was made,
thanks for informing us that it was made in China.

It's crazy that anyone would put that much effort into making something that couldn't possibly ever work.

If nothing else I'd love to have one just to annoy people with.  Only one I ever saw came from Germany.

That would be fun to carry around and padlock to something heavy when not being carried.

Snicker.  Now you've made me want one.

Early days in the MVWC, (see pg. 7, March 1988 MVWC Newsletter for those who have the early issues)  Brookstone advertised two sizes of "select-a-wrench" for $17.95 (sizes 1/4" to 7/16") and $19.95 (sizes 1/2" to 13/16").

today I was cleaning stuff off of my old metal desk in the spare room, had to look in every box that I
found, has been a long time since I had been near that desk. anyhow, to make a short story long;

I spotted this box that was 6" long by 1 5/8" x  1"  the end tab said 'SELECT A WRENCH SET "

printed on the front panel was: Ingenious wrench set is joined so they'll never separate, each one clearly marked with it's size.  when you select the one you want, fold the set flat to form a srong handle with plenty of leverage. six sizes; 1/4" 9/32"  5/16"  11/32"  3/8"  7/16"

MADE IN TAIWAN for Avon Prods. Inc. Distr. New York, N.Y.10019
A
AVON 1991
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

on the rear panel is a large S with SAWYERS in small letters over it in a circle.

Yup, it is still brand new, wrapped with milky colored soft plastic wrap.

where did I get it ?????  when ?????

now if I can get my better 1/2 to help me put on a picture sometime.

Avon sold hand tools?  Picturing the Avon lady crawling around under an old truck, replacing the tranny.

Of course, the grease would do wonders for the complexion...maybe I missed that advertising campaign.

Avon sold, and still sells a variety of things you might not expect. I know my wife bought me at least one watch from Avon, and I have a perfume bottle by them in the shape of a monkey wrench.

Papaw, now that you mentioned the monkey wrench, I have one packed away somewhere and
also the anvil, plus a few others. when I saw your note, I remembered that my wifes younger
sister had been a Avon agent and my wife would get her sales books, that is most likely where
I bought the wrench. ( few years back )

I also have one.   Taiwan made but l forget who.    Its too thick where it should be thin and too thin where a little meat would be better.  Floppy feel, poor fit to bolts and generally not too useful.

l wouldn't give it up easy either.    Those are the tools that show us the value of a common DOE in a way no other can.
