7266 Level

 Anybody recognize this level. Its 28 in long and has no marking except the 7266 stamped in top. Nothing special but it is intact . Auctioneer coudn't get a $1 bid for it and a 12in square and my bidding hand twitched. Thought it would be interesting to see who made it but no luck so far. Would cost more to ship it than its worth so guess I'll clean it up a little and put it on the level shelf.Would appreciate any info as to maker. Thanks

I don't know about the level.
 But it almost certainly premium old growth cherry wood. YUM

Look real close at the plate in the middle holding the center level vial. Most were marked there, although some were very lightly stamped.

 After a cleaning with alcohol & lacquer thinner and applying a coat of paste wax,I have found no identifying marks beyond the 7266. As can be seen the escuthcheon plate is devoid of any markings. Surely someone has seen a 7xxx marking on a level,maybe he will wander by sometime. 7266 could be 7268

Jim, Nice job of cleaning that old level up. It looks to me like it'd make a fine decoration for the mantle. Beauty is really in the eye of the beholder, who really cares who the maker was if you needed a decoration? lol

Don Rosebrook wrote a book on levels, I'll have to look his email address up when I get home. He moght be able to shed some light on this.
