X is used to indicate the strength of the beer.

One  (X) - Blacksmith may miss anvil occasionally
Two  (XX) - Blacksmith may hit wrong end of anvil occasionally
Three (XXX) - Cat had better hide.
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.
