A sliding sleeve would bringing the forked ends together and secure, allowing the prongs to be snapped into the inside of something and then released for removal?  But what?

Yes, the fork end squeezes together with moderate pressure.

Folding shelf or table leaf support would be my guess.

Here you go http://robinsonsantiques.com/table-leaf-supports/table-leaf-supports-1-4.htm (http://robinsonsantiques.com/table-leaf-supports/table-leaf-supports-1-4.htm)
Hope you have the other two parts, they must be hard to come by.

Swell, 3bay.  Now all you need to do is find someone with the two other parts.  ;-)

Have 2 old tables that these items hold the leaf up.   Wonder what happened to this ones table?

Thank you, you guys are the best!

Another mystery solved.

I see there is a company selling these online for just $15 a set btw. The antique guy may be gouging, lol. Unless of course new = lesser quality.
