Title: Greenfield tool Co. Gutter or Pump plane
Post by: Hoarder on May 31, 2017, 02:41:53 PM
Another tool from a inherited collection. I have a reprint of the 1872 Greenfield catalog that shows an illustration of a gutter plane and a pump plane. Both have handles and appear bigger then this one which is 9 inched long. The pump plane looks more like this one. I tried a quick search to find out what a pump plane is or does and found nothing.

think of pipe, made in 2 pieces of wood then wired together is my guess.  i seen wood pipe b4 and was impressed that it could work.

Yep.  After assembly, it works much like an old tire pump.  You just put the open end of the tall pump in the liquid and go at it.

Hello,Hoarder. Is that a true radius on the bottom of the plane, or, on the blade? Most plane makers made matched sets of hollows and rounds. I believe the plane would be named after the profile it cut, as opposed to its shape. So, if yours is a true radius, I believe yours would be a hollow. My other thought is that yours may be the mating plane used to cut the profile on a bullnose plane. Profiles cut into wooden planes needed the mating plane to cut that profile. Make sense? Corrections, please, if I have explained this incorrectly. Regards, Lou

The plane body I think is worn sorta flattened on the bottom the iron is about a 3/4 inch radius. There are notches on each side of the plane that are approximately a 1-1/8 inch radius. I have no other plane that might be a companion. Using this to create a half pipe ID for a joined two piece water pipe might be the purpose. I guess at the time many water pipes were made of wood ??

Or it could be half of a set, for instance to cut the edge of a table that hinges together?

Yes, but for that I would assume some kind of guide is needed? We have one with a quarter round and a step. That plane coukd cut the female side.... ?
