Pawn shop and garage sale finds in late January'12
« on: January 29, 2012, 11:24:24 AM »
Bonney 1/2" A-704 ratchet is really heavy.
It is a "sealed" ratchet using rivet pins.
Got oil in it a-ok using the large grease hole on the top.
Loud clicker, 20 teeth.
O:H foundry mark.

JS USA 1/2" ratchet. Sure feels like an S-K.
44 teeth. very loud clicker.

Craftsman1/2" ratchet, 43773  EE  7.
44 teeth, but a little sticky. Could of missed some.
I don't know how to take it apart to clean and verify condition.
Outside is very clean.
There is a spring-loaded pin next to the 1/2"drive.
Do you push this pin in,,,to release something??
Need to get inside it.

Plomb screwdriver, flat blade, #9704 Los Angeles 7B.
I like the solid steel cap! Thick and heavy.
A few chips in the woob, but no cracks.
Good useable shape for it's age.

Plomb 3/8" ratchet WF-21.
Excellent shape, inside and out. Loud clicker, 24 tooth.

Ace reamer, 1/2" made in USA. still sharp.

Craftsman 3/8" ratchet, 43784 -VF- Fair outside cosmetic shape, but perfect insides.
Large metal selector.

Herbrand 3/8" ratchet, J-10.
4 (lazy)L forged date mark on it.
Can't open it up, and after soaking, got it to ratchet to the left to remove.
Loud clicker. The 4 tiny Phillips screws are rusted up, and will have to be drilled and use an "easy-out" if I decide to open it up. You can actually see the "left" pawl click and move.

Kraeuter  LSA 430 5/8 cold chisel.
I dressed up the strike end and re-pointed it. Nice steel.

Black & Decker tool wrench. 9/16" and 1/2 inch.
Really thick steel! Must be old to be this thick!

Over 3 weeks of looking for these finds.
Even a blind sow, or an old man,,, finds an acorn now and then."

It's easy to get that one apart - it's one of those "Quick-clean/Quick-release" models!

Simply push the centre QR button all the way down (past what you need to do to release the socket) and it should lock. The drive assembly should then just drop out...

That Ace reamer is the berries!! Ace made good stuff!! I have some of their taps (one of them scottg sent me!), would like to assemble a whole set of their tapping stuff. Works today as good as the day they made it!!

OK folks, here is the "scoop" on how to remove the ratchet assembly on a Craftsman 1/2 inch ratchet 43773 EE 7.

After many hours of researching the web, and reading old posts on different tool sites, and even manuals,  ,,,and then trying them all,,,,HERE IS HOW YOU DO IT!!!
And it is SO easy,,,after you learn how!!!!
Lay the ratchet on a hard surface, like a workbench, with the selector UP.

Then get a round end 1/2" dia.,,like a punch handle end.
Place the end on the center button and push!
Not hard, just push.
The button will stay in and a "CLICK" will be heard.

You can now easily pull out the whole ratchet assembly,,, look at it, lubricate it with your own brand of lubricant/grease.
Then place it back in the handle after you spread lube on the exposed gear teeth in the handle.
Then holding the ratchet assembly in the handle,,,turn it over, holding it all together with your fingers,, and push the small round steel pin sticking out of the front plate.
"CLICK",,,you will hear it! now it is licked in place!
THAT'S IT!!!
It's locked in and absolutely ready to ratchet.
Even a big fingered Texas dufus like me,, could do it!

I have become a fan of those Quik Clean ratchets. I have a 1/4" - would like a 3/8" if I could find one reasonable. Foreign-made for Sears but sliding pawl and very smooth operators.

Now that you have smartened me up about them, I will be on the lookout for you.
If I find one, I'll let you know.
I was surprised just how nice the innards were, and now that I know, my knowledge has been expanded because of your sharing this knowledge.
I thank Papaw and you for this.

I went and checked my ratchets and I found out I have a Craftsman 1/4 inch 43771 EE7.
I can't get it apart.
I push hard,, and no click. It has the same lock pin next to the 1/4" square drive.
How do you get this one apart?

Also, I have a "Challenger" by Proto, 3/8" ratchet # 1287 that looks alot like the Craftsman, but does not have a locking pin.
You push in the selector all the way, and you can pull back and expose part of the innards, just enough to squirt oil into the pawl area.

Know anything that would help me dis-assemble?

The Challenger by Proto ratchet that I mentioned has been dis-assembled!
I kept trying things, and the plate on the square drive bottom side WILL come off if you hold the wrench and twist this serrated cover plate. Once it is off, you just pull out the whole ratchet assembly and lube it.
Putting it back together was also a snap because you just drop in the assembly, hold it in while you place the bottom cover on and twist it closed. Done!!

Still haven't figured out how to dis-assemble the 1/4 " Craftsman mentioned in the last post.

Hi lbgradwell,Thanks for chiming in.
I have this little 1/4" in my hands here at the computer, and I cannot get the "release" button pushed down and make it "click".
I can push it in about 1/8 inch, but it won't stay there or go "click" like the 1/2 inch model.
I will go out to the shop, vise it up with small socket on the top button and squeeze a little harder than I can push with only my thumb and flat punch.
Does it matter where the selector is turned,,,,L or R ??

Yee-Haaawww,,,, I got it out!!!
I vised it up with a very small socket on the button and pushed slowly,,,,did this over and over.
Finally after 20 or so repetitions, the button stayed in!
But the little socket removal pin was sticking out, but would not STAY OUT, so I vise gripped this pin and then tapped a little on the back of the vise-grip and IT ALL CAME OUT,,, with a lot of brown rust and gunk.
I will now clean it all up and see if I can get it to work normally.

Thanks for confirming to me that the 1/4" was the same as the 1/2".

Now, I will be on the look-out for the 3/8" size, to make the group.

Hey Papaw, another kudos for your website!

Ok fellow tool lovers, I cleaned everything up, and re-assembled this 1/4 ratchet with absolutely no problems. It snapped back into the toothed handle and started rotation.
It is complete now,,,ready to work.
What I have learned here is the true core of tool discussion.
I have a completely cleaned and properly lubricated tiny 1/4" ratchet that is as good as new,,,,probably better.
Plus the owner now has the knowledge to keep it this way,,,or better,, to pass it along to someone if anybody asks how to do something like this.
When I truly need a 1/4 inch ratchet, this is the one I will pick out of my many that I possess and and have ready to use.
Why you ask?
It is because I had to ask many just how to repair it.

Hell, I have a file cabinet drawer dedicated to the storage of 1/4 " ratchets, but this one was completely repaired to 100% because of the interaction of others who also wanted to help me complete this mission.
This means more to me personally than the intrinsic value of the tool!
Thanks for the camaraderie, and direction.  ,,,mc   over and out.
