Title: Crescent or not???
Post by: Bumpermech on August 28, 2019, 06:19:19 PM
So my buddy got a few old tools in a box for cheap, went through what he wanted and gave me the rest. Most are junk and well beyond broken but I figured why not take a look. I found this 4” adjustable wrench which got me curious. Sadly it has no company name, only says “Jamestown, N.Y.” on one side and “Made in U.S.A.” On the other side. Searched for the last few days and can’t find anything like it. Has anyone ever ran across one like this? If so, do you have any information on it?

Jamestown was where Crescent was made, but I can't figure out why it is not on the wrench. I have one or two 4" ones that do say Crescent.

That’s the problem I’ve been running into. The 1915 patent doesn’t have any writing on the handle either which for me only fuels my curiosity and frustration lol https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/32/26/fb/23c29ded201e17/US1133236.pdf

Also see hardware Dealers Magazine from 1910 which has an ad for a crescent wrench which says crescent so they were making them well before the 1915 patent filing. https://books.google.com/books?id=SMRNAAAAMAAJ&dq=%22crescent%20adjustable%22%20strength&pg=PA1431&ci=4%2C1309%2C952%2C149&source=bookclip#v=onepage&q&f=false

Any chance you can take better lit pics of the red circled areas?

These are the best I can get with my phone. But they’re too large for the site upload. I uploaded them to google at this link https://photos.app.goo.gl/PP3fcLvmRgUAYpB16

It could be a Hjorth wrench or an early Danielson.

I have the exact same 4". Sent a question to alloy artifacts some years ago, no reply.

That wrench doesn't look like Crescent to me. It's not Danielson, they had square jaws. My vote is Hjorth.

See pick below for the difference. another factor to consider is the raised lettering looks very much like this wrench (see pic of side marked Jamestown)   https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-william-hjorth-co-adjustable-291815394 (https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-william-hjorth-co-adjustable-291815394) which is a marked example of a Hjorth.
