Title: Unusual piece of iron/tool 9 1/2 inches overall with 3 1/2 inch curved blade.
Post by: cgw2also on July 13, 2017, 05:25:29 PM
Saw this a few weeks back at my favorite antique store and couldn't get it off my mind so went back this morning and bought it. 9 1/2'' overall, handle? is 6'', with curved blade 3 1/2''. Blade is 1/4'' at top tapering to a sharpened edge and appears to have been pounded on  with a heavy object. Handle? looks like it was made to act as a file also. In its present condition I cannot see any names or numbers on it and would like to get some info on it before I decide whether or not to dip it in my Enviro-Rust. Any ideas on what it was for, who might have made it etc. are welcomed. TIA for any info.

Probably a re-purposed file or rasp made into a new tool.

I have to go with Lwill2 & Bill300d with the idea that the tool was made from an old file.

looking at what is visible, reminds me of a froe, and if the blade does have a curve, it may be possible
that someone was splitting wood to make barrel of keg staves.

just my thoughts on a use.

After watching Eric Georges "Craftsman's Legacy" this morning and seeing the Bucket maker  who made a curved stave splitter it kinda looks like that. His was shop made by him, so one could have repurpose old files or rasps into a new tool a link to a preview of the episode but that tool is not shown. http://www.craftsmanslegacy.com/episodes/season_3/Episode-9 (http://www.craftsmanslegacy.com/episodes/season_3/Episode-9)
This is a good show and some superb craftsman!!!

Eric sent me a friend request on facebook, and I got to chatting with him about the show and finally replaced my ota (over the air) antenna. On twice a week here in the St.Louis area on 9.4 the create channel of pbs at 10:30am Tuesdays and Thursdays. So it maybe on other pbs stations around the country.  It's nice having him as a FB friend cause I can quiz him on things in the background and things they gloss over! Some very interesting people he has had on!!!!
I would watch reruns of his show before anything with a kardasian on it! and so many more useless tv shows!
