Title: Garage Gazette outage
Post by: Papaw on June 10, 2018, 01:49:47 PM
It seems our sister site, The Garage Gazette,  is having server problems again. Hope it isn't a major problem!
We know all too well that sites can crash and be lost all too easily, as this one did back in 2011 or so.

I just checked Tools and Garages, Rusty's forum,  and it is down also

Got an email from Uncle Buck-

"Hey Noel, thanks for the message. I am sure a few of the guys are a bit restless with the site down. Rusty and I have never maintained any contact off of the site, (we should, my fault) I know he will get it squared away, he always does. Like as not, by tomorrow."

Probably stuck one of his flip flops in the server and fried the bloody thing!

Sounds like it's not too bad.

Perhaps we could get a relay notification system going? For when either site goes down, emergencies, internet service interrupted etc. Being I'm home alot now and have a landline I could be a part of the system/chain.

Just got this from Rusty --

Quote:

"They've advised us they have about 107 servers (down from 140 earlier), this is just under 1% of the systems there. These blades went down after a firmware upgrade to fix the TLS problems in the ILO. This server is one of the affected units. Most units upgraded without incident, but some the power management controller failed to come back online taking the server offline. They are discussing with HPE whether a downgrade will help or we need to replace hardware. Its a mess but we'll work through it until its resolved."

Sure hope they do get it resolved. When Tool Talk went down, everything was lost, but with help and the great membership, it came alive again.

This is the message that Rusty received from the hosting company. It's a major hardware firmware failure -- and it may not be resolved quickly because they don't have enough hardware to replace the failed components (the blade servers). We may have to accept the fact that when we do get up and running , there may not be a proper backup to restore the site to a recently archived steady state =-- bottom line; a lot of recently posted content may be lost.

"News: Atlanta - Blades in A01-05, B01-05, C01-05, J11-J15 Published: 11/06/2018 We've had a detailed update from our DC about the status of around 120 blade servers that have been affected by a recent firmware update.

At the beginning of June, we began upgrading our servers with the new ILO code to address both TLS vulnerability and the new Java security requirements. During last week we had 1-2 servers that failed their upgrade but completed over 1500 upgrades successfully. On Friday we started upgrading the next batch of systems in A01-05, B01-05, C01-05, J11-J15, there were not incidents detected until Saturday when a total of 174 servers dropped offline over the course of 3 hours, we’ve had a few more drop out on Sunday and Monday as well.

We notified the DC to check through the first systems and they found the server refused to power up, it just sat with a flashing red health error light. They contacted HPE for assistance and carried out their recommend downgrade procedure on a couple of the blades. It made no difference.

HP's tech investigated a few of the blades and discovered that the power management controller had failed to upgrade properly and was preventing the blade from powering up. We have tried a variety of operations with HPE to resurrect these servers, some has come back to life, some are still offline. The DC will continue to work with HPE to find a solution to these issues.

We have swapped hardware where we have available stock but have now depleted our stock of spare compatible systems so we are reliant on HPE resolving the firmware issue. In the meantime we’re shipping a couple of pallets of servers from New York and Denver to Atlanta so we can replace hardware where necessary.

The DC is working round the clock with HPE to find a resolution, if we can’t get a firmware resolution then we’ll replace the hardware as soon as additional kit arrives on site.

Its an unfortunate and messy situation all round and we apologise for the downtime."

Perhaps I'm being optimistic here, but generally servers will be built with the operating system and drivers on a separate hard drive array and the data on another.  This sort of setup should enable restoration of sites easily.  Further, I would assume the hosting company maintains regular backups of the data on yet another system.

Fingers crossed and maybe we'll be lucky.

I would say that regular backups by forum administrators is also a good practice unfortunately I am totally guilty of failing that on my own boards so I'm not gonna say nothin' about that!

Still waiting for them to get the servers in and the hard drives swapped.

The real killer is that I'd just started a rsync to a new server in Dallas when everything went down.

Ray has posted everything that we know at the moment.

I'm out of town and on the cell so I may be slow on updating this thread.

I tried to bring up the backups on the new server (new data center) but the databases were corrupt. Ray had alerted me that he was getting database errors when trying to connect but I couldn't replicate them. It never occurred to me that AWS S3 was in the Virginia area.

We may end up having to do as PaPaw did in 2011 and restart from the ground up. I'm holding off on setting up new sites hoping that they manage to get the servers live again and I can transfer the data out.

Rusty  who beating his head against the wall.

Feeling a little out of place here, not sure where to post anything related to the stuff we do. So, I'll just keep posting in here.

Due to unfortunate recent events (another attack of the meat claws... read: hands where they shouldn't have been during times when they shouldn't have been there) I burnt out a bunch of semiconductors in my DC lathe controller. Which has now led me to, once again, for the third time, rebuild my controller enclosure.

Making changes to things I learned the last two rounds. Making the systems more reliable and stable. I was having issues with intermittent running due to some faulty components on the kbcc 125 controller board. I have a bunch of semiconductors, resistors, variable resistors and potentiometers coming in the mail. Better heat dissipation, a better layout, no longer a rats nest from adding components (bells and whistles). Better wiring.
One major change was changing the cable to the remote control from permanently attached to a parallel cable. The biggest pain previously was if I needed to work on something I had to drag the 300~lbs lathe out away from the wall to get the remote box and enclosure out. Now, just one easy to maneuver parallel cable and plug.

I have the AC and DC power run to everything, tomorrow I will do all the control wiring.

And i swear, the bench was totally cleared off when I started...

 "Billy G"

I do not agree. Generally, staying on topic in a thread would be desired. That said, our situation here is a little different. While MG, GG, and T&G are sister sites, all three differ from each other, and all three differ from this site. Papaws Wrench, is aimed primarily at much older tools, both hand, and machine, than the GG and even more different still than MG site. While Papaw and the rest of the guys here have been more than gracious in allowing our "invasion" of their site, we do not want to steal or confuse the general interest of the existing membership here with a bunch of threads scattered about the PW site that would not normally be a good fit to discussion generally shared here.

I see no reason that guys should not feel free to discuss whatever stuff they normally would at MG in the threads that clearly say GG, MG or T&G on this web site. My thinking is we should not spread the usual threads or discussions we would have on our respective sites all over the PW site. Of course, at some point there will be a progress report in this thread, or the other one relating to GG, MG and T&G. They are just two threads, so it should not be difficult to find most recent progress reports when they come in.

That is just my thinking. I think we need to be respecting of the host, and the general site mission here.

UB

I am simply advocating that we "do as the Romans do" so to speak while spending time here.

In general, subjects such as machinist's threads should go in General Discussion since Tool Talk doesn't have a forum dedicated to such, but in this case it doesn't matter to me.
Let's just be friendly and supportive of each other.

Tool Talk has always been a very laid back and friendly place and I don't let controversy reign here.

doesnt he gear box/ belt pulley control the speed adequately?

or do you need the rpms exact for some work?

Just more control. The belts on my lathe are a bit of a pain. It started because my motor blew bearings, and I have a problem needing to constantly make things better. That's the majority of what goes on in my shop. Changing things, adding systems, making things needlessly more complicated for my own personal enjoyment.
I have a tach, an ammeter display, voltage display, variable speed, push button start/stop and direction change. I needed to change the setup because things for a bit messy from adding bells and whistles.

I'd like to do the same thing to my mill too.

I don't have one anymore. That was a long time ago. After several years of political discussion boards, I got connected to  67-72chevytrucks.com (http://67-72chevytrucks.com) and enjoyed it immensely and became a moderator there and a supporter. Liz and Josh later helped me set up the original Tool Talk back in 2005 or so. Though I don't mod anymore, I am still a member.

I have a 98 GMC Sierra that I bought second hand in 2002. Still have it with a new transmission in 2009 and a new crate engine in 2012.

I don't intend to ever buy a new truck, or even another one unless this one gets totalled. I don't care for the new ones, the many computers in them, and certainly don't want another truck note!

Back in 2005 or so, I was driving a 1984 Ford pickup.  Had a younger friend who had a 5-year-old model and was antsy to get himself a new truck.  Said he wanted one bad.
I advised him to keep his pants on.  Pointed out that by driving my old Ford, I had avoided spending enough money to put one son through college.  He had two young sons, but didn't take my advice.  He had a new pickup within the month.
Lost track of him, but expect he has had several trucks since then.  And made a lot of interest payments.  Hope his boys came out OK.

That's one reason I don't want a new truck. I don't have a note and neither does the wife ( 2007 Dodge caliber ). We need all we earn from SS and Teacher Retirement. We don't waste money, but we are able to help the kids and grandkids and eat out when we want to. I worked 6 years after beginning to collect SS and put most of that in the bank.

I have never had a car payment to a dealer. The most I have ever had was a bank loan for maybe 2-3K that I would pay off in short order. Of course I have never had a new car either. The closest to a new car I have ever owned was a 1999 Grand Marquis that I bought in 2012 that had 21K miles on it. It still had the new car smell.

Never had a brand new car,  but did get wife several new Jeeps, mainly so I didn't worry about her being stuck on the highway.   Did get a new pickup in 86.   Needed one for a job I had,  Mazda B2000,  drove it 195,000.   Right now got our last new  Jeep, an 08 Liberty,  which has the unlimited lifetime powertrain warranty,  they only offered that a year or two.   Coming up on ten years old, still running the original battery.   Just not done a lot to it other than brakes.  Today the speedo rolled over 196K.  My 96 Chevy 1500 has 204K and still runs good,  so not seeing a need to upgrade.  Got a few more sitting in the yard as backup, and a few more as long term projects, which I predict will keep be broke til I expire.

Same, bill. I don't have many opportunities throughout the day to just sit down and relax, when I do, I usually try to read something on my phone. The forums are a nice outlet. And all the things I like to post, jobs and what not. I have no other avenues. I wonder if it may be time to just setup a new forum and abandon the other one for now. If it comes back we can always start moving posts over

Someone else will have to set up a replacement because I won't be doing that. I am not ready to give up on things just yet. For me, when Rusty says we are done, we are done, I am simply relying on whatever he says. I do understand thoughts of replacement, but I do not see myself as a part of starting fresh from the ground up again. I have been a part of that several times now and I just do not want to start back over at zero.

Many other members have invested so much more of themselves in time and effort to the site than I have I will feel very bad if it all ends up lost. MG was new enough that not a huge amount of content was lost, and it was just getting off the ground so to speak. GG and T&G were several years old and much more established so it is hard to just give up on either site while there is any hope at all of re-opening those sites.

It is not easy to restore a forum when all server data is lost- believe me, I know all too well how it can happen. I keep backups of Tool Talk, but even that can be lost.

I sincerely hope GG ,T&G, and MG are salvaged, and I will help in any way I can.

So firmware... is the bad actor here.  Was thinking that, because the outage has been long.
I had heard power failure, and if that occurred as a firmware update was in progress .. a very, very nasty thing to recover from.

All the best to Rusty, cause he definitely has his hands full.... for now...

Hi guys, I finally got over here. I've been extremely busy at work, plus I've been getting involved with my son's tractor pulling hobby. I'll be doing my first competition pull in a couple of weeks. These tractors are kinda nuts on power, and they are nothing like any tractor I've ever been on before - and I've been on a lot of 'em!

I also want to thank Papaw for his wonderful hospitality and allowing us to convene here and exchange news. Being able to do so in invaluable!

I might just consider creating an email group on google groups or groups.io where everyone can connect via email without actually publicly sharing their email addresses. It would be a place where we can keep everyone connected without taking up space from someone else. If there is enough interest in doing so, I can certainly set it up.

In the mean time, I am just biding my time, and hope to see MG up and running again in the near future.

Any  updates yet?

There has been some discussion between Rusty and I about where things are going here. Rusty said a few days ago that there was still a possibility of our sites coming back online. Obviously, the longer this goes there more doubts everyone, myself included have as to these sites ever coming back. I told Rusty that even though waiting is tough, I wanted to wait a little longer. I have not defined for anyone, myself included what "a little longer is timewise" I think maybe another couple of weeks. If after that the sites are not back up then it is time to rebuild and start over from scratch. However, I think we will need to make some choices to rebuild perhaps differently than our old sites and in a way that is more secure without whatever exposure left us vulnerable to the kind of thing we are going through now.

The time for trying to wait this out is about over and thoughts of rebuilding are in my mind more and more. UB

I don't understand.
Tool Talk has no bias and no hassles. I keep it that way on purpose.
Even if Bruce signs on here, things will stay civil.
I do not hesitate to ban troublemakers as most members know.

Tool Talk has been going on this way since 2005.

I was dinking around and found there was a couple archives of the GG. Not much got archived. I couldn't get into any threads, but the titles were there in the sub forums. I figured it might jog a memory about any users that might have not found out we're over here for the time being. It's kinda like walking around in a burned building.

Well, new plan. All I am going to say is work has begun to replace the old GG, and hopefully the MG as two separate sites. If I cannot swing both sites then the plan will be to run both sites as one. Running both as one site is not the direction that I want to go, I want stand alones, but we will just see where that goes.

That is all I am saying for now, but there is your update, work has begun on replacing the sites, no more waiting.

Agreed, and you should continue to frequent and support this site even after the GG and MG sites are back up! All of these small sites can benefit from memberships and activity on all of these sites. We should support each others sites.

So Buck, it`s official the old GG is done all info lost?

For the most part yes, total rebuild from the ground up. Have not started just yet but things will come together fairly quickly now. Don't count on much if anything left over from the old site.

All that said, with a fresh start, we can add delete or change things and hopefully enhance the new site in ways to attract and increase membership.

Feel free to toss thoughts up here guys, thoughts can be integrated as I build the site so share your ideas. It looks promising for two individual sites as it was before, one to replace GG and another to replace MG, so keep your fingers crossed for that too.

The new sites will be more secure to protect us from such a monumental loss as we experienced this time. So we will not have to suffer through another deal like this again.

Yup, there is. Think about the old sites GG and MG. What things about the site, or maybe the layout or subject/topic sections offered did you dislike? What would you like to see different than the old sites, or better? I am not promising the moon here, but I do promise to try and implement ideas and suggestions you make here into the way the site is laid out and built! So, help with your thoughts and ideas and lets see if I cannot put together a site you guys will like!

If we can improve on our old sites even better. The replacements do not need to be cookie cutters for the old sites, they can and probably should be better than what we used to have!

Is it so bad to have the site's seperate? MG was new, didn't have a huge amount of content and not a huge number of members. I suppose there's no real reason why we can't all hang out together.

Honestly, I thought the machine shop guys would want their site dedicated specifically to machine shop like other type sites. I could easily dedicate a good part of the GG site to machinist content and roll the two sites into one. I just want to give members what they want. If the machine shop guys collectively want me to try to marry the sites I have no issue with that and I doubt the GG guys would either. It would not be difficult in my opinion.

If lack of content was a problem, then you will REALLY hate the new site! Every site has zero content when you open them, that is why it is so bad to open a new site and start over! It does not matter who owns the site, or how it is laid out, all start with zero content. Content only comes with membership and people posting and sharing. The MG was only something like six weeks or so old with roughly 100 people so yes, content was quite limited and would remain that way until membership and use provided the content.

Keep the atmosphere the same, to me this is the most important.

Maybe add a gun sub forum, bored mechanic had enough info to fill this up on his own. A brand by brand child subs in the general tool discussion, same brand by brand for power tools? Lots of times I think people lurk looking for info on a specific tool brand (maybe their grandfathers wright 3/8 ratchet)
and if all of the wright information was in one spot it would be easier to find than in the search function.

I like how pawpaw has the child boards set up, we could do something like that instead of having a entire front page of stickies.

Defiantly get it where we can use the tapatalk (or something similar). I used the app to read GG 75% of time, plus it was the best way I found to post pictures after the photobucket robbery.

Would diffidently need a huge outreach to try to get everyone back home.

Wasn't asking specifics, just general. like Chevy/ford, v8, six banger.

I like the idea of having the GG & MG combined, they after all have tools. Logo could be a problem LOL.
With that in mind, we can upload old projects and new comers will think we are a productive bunch.

A final thought TAPE is the safest back up, however that would require someone to change and store them.

BTW will we see a spell checker,  an upgrade I certainly welcome...
Cheers,

I vote for 2 different forums as I liked it that way. Combining them into one may make it too large and require too much scrolling through subjects. I'm liking Pepi's idea of a joined site with some minimalist  separation. I was always the find unread threads guy and would read everything. I didn't need to drill down into each subject to find the new stuff.

Maybe increase the photo sizes some. I had to resize every picture I posted.

I know the politics ruffled some feathers but I felt it was pretty good to see what other parts of the country think. I would like to see that continue too.

I'll be with the new iteration of GG however it looks...it's been a while but we've been through this before.  A shame so much content was lost, a lot of work adding such detailed content like Ray and others.

It's always been more about the people and atmosphere than anything else.

I agree with slip knot we need a political thread, good stuff and some damn funny cartoons pop up there.

Don't visit many forums, but that one thread separates this group from the rest.  Also shows most are adults and can survive and accept different opinions.

No, simple machines is the name of the forum software, nothing to do with the hosts that pooched the puppy.

What's there looks like a fresh installation of the forum without any of the configuration needed to turn it into home.  If Rusty has any backups of the old forum this could be the first step at an attempt to restore data and accounts.  Fingers crossed!

There are now two Garage Gazettes. It might be wise to register on both so that you will be on whichever one becomes the real one.
Rusty is working on the situation.

I'm so confused.

This all is a rather elaborate way to get rid of me.  You could have just asked me to leave you know lol

Some people just can't take a hint. lol

I'm waiting to see how things pan out with the two sites and all before I try to post anything.
