Freebie
« on: August 13, 2011, 12:44:17 PM »
I need a new front tire on my BMW, so in order to shop locally, I went to the local custom shop Twisted Cycles ( http://www.twistedcustomcycles.com/2011/02/16/twisted-custom-cycles-launches-website/ ) , and though they are primarily builders of Harleys, I knew they could order the tire. I paid for it and had some conversation there about bikes, etc. When I handed the guy my card, he saw the old tool stuff, so we then talked about them. Before I left, he gave me a rusty old wrench he had "broken". It turned out to be a Gearench, made in Houston, Texas , patented June 1, 1926, by J. A. Peterson. Seen on Schulz #671. I will repair it and clean it up. The first two photos are from a sale sometime in the past, and the other two are the wrench I got today.

Not cleaned up yet. It is in a vinegar solution, those clean pictures are from the web.

Papaw, I've always had good luck with www.biketiresdirect.com, even for odd sizes.

There is a place near where I work that always has the best price and selection. I can easily buy the tire there, but I wanted to "buy local" and let the local guy make a dollar or two on it. I had a bike shop here in the 70's, and too many people would buy elsewhere, looking for a deal, when I could have made them the same deal locally.
Besides, it is just too damn hot right now for me to want to do all the work! I'll bring the wheel in off the bike, I want to inspect the bearings and brakes personally. Bought the Dunlop 491 Elite II, a high mileage touring tire.

The 8" Gearench cleaned up as good as it is going to get. Rust pitting all over it, but I can see the 8" GEARENCH and TRADE MARK on one side and GEARENCH MFG> CO on the other. In the handle on one side is HOUSTON< TEXAS, and on the other, FORGED STEEL PATENTED . I  reset the pin that was loose, and lubed it good so now it works nicely.

Free is always good :)

Nice find.

Just wondering what is the lengh of it.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
